Mutlu Yillar!

A quick message to wish you a happy new year, or a Mutlu Yillar as they say here. I'm off this afternoon and tomorrow as well.

I've been spoilt rotten at work for the occasion and I am now the proud owner of a mug and a diary with my name written on them!

J'ai été pourri gâté par mes collègues et suis désormais l'heureux propriétaire d'un mug et d'un agenda avec mon nom inscrit dessus!

Hagia Sophia

After checking it from my windows for about two weeks, I finally took the time to visit the most visited place in Turkey, Hagia Sophia.
Hagia Sophia is not your usual mosque or usual church, it actually is a bit of both at the same time and that certainly makes it unique.
It has a long and beautiful political and religious history; built in 360 as a church the place has been burnt down twice following various riots. The third version of the church (completed in 537) is pretty much what we can get to see today, at least architecturally speaking.

Indeed, when Constantinople lost its place as the centre of the Christian faith, Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, decided to turn the church into a mosque. A couple of minarets were added and all Christian symbols were concealed by a thick layer of plaster.

It is only in the 20^th century that the first President of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, decided to turn the whole place into a museum, recognizing thus its interest as a secular part of the world heritage. This decision triggered the renovation of the place and the excavating of numerous Christian elements testifying of the mixed past of the place.
This is really representative of Atatürk‘s view about Turkey: Muslim but fiercely secular. As a result, Atatürk is still extremely admired and remembered in Turkey (We have 4 huge pictures of him in the office!) which –in a nutshell- explains why the population is now so vocal about their fear of losing this political heritage in favour of a more authoritative model.

Après l’avoir observé à travers mes fenetres, je me suis enfin decide à visiter le lieu touristique le plus visité de Turquie, Hagia Sophia.
Hagia Sophia (ou Aya Sophia) n’est pas une mosquée ordinaire, ni une église ordinaire, c’est en réalité un petit peu des deux à la fois, ce qui rend certainement le bâtiment unique.
Le lieu est chargé d’une longue et émouvante histoire religieuse et politique. Construite en 360, l’église a été réduite en cendres à deux reprises suites à des révoltes populaires. L atroisième version de l’église (ouverte en 537) est plus ou moins celle que l’on peut visiter aujourd’hui, au moins d’un point de vue architectural.
En effet, quand Constantinople perdit sa place de centre de la foi chrétienne, le Sultan Mehmet II Le Conquérant décida de transformer l’église en une mosquée. Il y fit ajouter quelques minarets et appliquer une épaisse couche de platre pour recouvrir toutes traces de la symbolique chrétienne.
Cest au 20^ème siècle que le premier président de la république de Turquie, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, décida de séculariser l’endroit et d’en faire un musée, reconnaissant ainsi la place de Hagia Sophia dans le patrimoine culturel mondial. Cette décision, permit également de rénover l’endroit, d’excaver de nombreux éléments chrétiens et de révéler les anciennes mosaïques du temps où Hagia Sophia était une église.
Cela est très représentatif de la vision de la Turquie cultivée par Atatürk ; Musulmane, mais farouchement laïque. Aussi, Atatürk est-il toujours extrêmement admiré en Turquie (Nous avons 4 énormes photos de lui au bureau !) ce qui –pour faire court- explique pourquoi la population est aujourd’hui si craintive à l’idée de perdre cet héritage politique à la faveur d’un modèle plus autoritaire.

Asia

Today was a great day for me and not because of Xmas. I was invited at one of our subcontractor's facilities in Istanbul-Anatolian side. So I crossed the Bosphorus and went to Asia! It was really nice, for they did the whole shabang for me: French flag, food, meet and greet and a tour of the facility (I had to wear a sterile sciency outfit complete with cap... Well!!) They all were really nice to me and complimentary about my Turkish!

Also, on my way back to Europe, I have found this one church where they were celebrating Xmas so I stopped by and felt Christmassy for a while :)

Aujourd'hui était une journée spéciale pour moi, et non pas à cause de Noël. J'étais invité chez un de nos sous-traitants a Istanbul-Anatolie. J'ai donc traversé le Bosphore et me suis rendu en Asie!

C'était super car ils ont fait la totale pour moi, drapeau français, mets turcs, séance de poignées de main et surtout une visite guidée du site. J'ai du porté une tenue stérile et une charlotte... Bref

Tout le monde était très accueillant et a fait des compliments sur mon turc!

A mon retour en Europe, je suis tombé sur cette église dans laquelle ils célébraient Noël. Je m'y suis donc arrêté brièvement afin de prendre part aux festivités.

Merry X-Mas et Joyeux Noël

No Xmas for me, for it just does not exist here. I worked today and will work tomorrow too. 

I am bringing chocolate for my workmates tomorrow, just to try and feel Christmassy.

What I wrote on the box is actually new year wishes since New Year is the real big deal in Turkey. Santa Claus, street ornaments and illuminated trees are symbols that Turkish people use to celebrate the new year and not at all for Xmas.

I will have a Turkish friend over for dinner tomorrow but nothing too fancy.

Pas de Noël pour moi car cela n'existe tout simplement pas ici. J'ai travaillé aujourd'hui et ce sera également le cas demain.

J'apporte des chocolats au bureau demain afin d'avoir tout de même un peu l'esprit de Noël.

Ce que j'ai écrit sur la boîte est en fait des vœux pour la bonne année. C'est le nouvel an qui importe énormément ici. D'ailleurs, le père Noël, le sapin et les rues illuminées sont des symboles que les turcs ont repris pour la nouvelle année et non pour Noël.

J'invite une amie turque a dîner demain soir, mais sinon je ne prévois pas de faire qqch de particulier.

I cannot stress how amazing the view from the balcony is! I did not know that at the time of the video but my flat offers a direct view on some of the main iconic landmarks of Istanbul : The Blue Mosque, Agia Sophia, Maiden Tower, Topkapi Palace, Galata Tower.... the list is endless! Plus, what you can see beyond the water actually is the Asian continent!!

Je ne peux pas décrire à quel point la vue est incroyable! Au moment où j'ai filmé cette vidéo, je n'étais pas conscient que la vue que mon appartement offre, comprend la plupart des monuments représentatifs d'Istanbul : La Mosquée Bleue, Sainte Sophie, La tour de la jeune fille, Le Palais de Topkapi, la tour Galata.... c'est sans fin. Par ailleurs, ce que l'on peut voir au delà du Bosphore est en réalité la partie d'Istanbul située sur le continent asiatique !

First week-end

Here is some news on my first week-end in Istanbul.

The main thing is that I have just found my flat. Finding a flat in less than a week is no mean feat! I think I have visited between 15 and 20 flats before falling for the most unique flat. We are in the paperwork at the moment, so I am waiting to hold the keys before believing that I’m going to have a flat with a mezzanine and a small terrace with the most breathtaking view of the world bar none!  I’ll certainly try to do a flat tour on here!

Today I took it easy and went to explore my future neighborhood. It’s called Şişhane (It’s pronounces Sheesharney) or Tomtom and it is very central, very trendy, very arty but also surprisingly very traditional in many ways.  Indeed, in my street, people still tie a rope to a basket, throw it by the window and wait for the shop keepers to fill it with what they ordered.

So I can’t wait!

Des nouvelles de ma première semaine à Istanbul.

Le plus important et que je viens de trouver mon futur appartement. Trouver un appart en moins d’une semaine n’est pas aisé ! Je pense avoir visité entre 15 et 20 apparts avant d’avoir un coup de cœur pour un appart’ vraiment unique. Nous sommes en plein dans les papiers, donc j’attends de tenir les clefs de mon chez-moi avant de croire que je vais pouvoir profiter d’un appart’ avec une mezzanine et d’une petite terrasse qui offre la vue la plus incroyable sur toute la ville ! Je ferai certainement une visite en vidéo sur ce blog.
Aujourd’hui, j’ai pris le temps d’aller explorer mon futur voisinage. Ca s’appelle Şişhane (prononcé Chichané) ou Tomtom et c’est au cœur d’Istanbul, c’est un quartier en vue, très artistique mais également très traditionnel. En effet dans ma rue, les gens attachent font descendre un panier en osier par la fenêtre à l’aide d’une corde et attendent que les marchands y déposent leur commande.

Je suis impatient !

Voilà, j'ai pris quelques secondes pour prendre une photo de la tour dans laquelle je travaille, il s'agit de la tour noire sur la première photo. Les autres photos sont simplement des vues du quartier.

Pas grand chose à voir avec ce à quoi je m’attendais.

Flat Hunting

Hi there,

No pic today, for the weather still does not allow it.

I spent the afternoon with Ipek, who is the crème de la crème when it comes to real estate agent. She's been recommended to me by my company and she knows her craft inside out. I'm really chuffed to be able to rely on her. 

I have visited 5 flats with her and I have 6 more visits planned over the week-end. Ipek made me realise that my budget is going to allow me to have a really nice flat in Istanbul. I saw a flat with a view on The Bosphorus, another one offering a view on a gorgeous Mosque with minaret but for now my interest is mainly titillated by the last two flats I visited. 

One of them is quite small but everything is in it from furniture, to internet to utensils....and it's all brand new. In addition, the owner is a really nice lady speaking beautiful English. I don't like the smallness, but I liked the fact that everything was in mint condition and decorated with gusto.

The last one I visited was... well it was extravagant! Think a hint of a 70's vibe, a touch of African statues, and a slightly Japanese architecture and above all... a bedroom with a looooooong window offering the most stunning panorama of Taksim Square. It also has full satellite TV, Internet, all the amenities and..... a maid and 2 bedrooms! I know my description of the decorating sounds like I’m about to rent a dive-in but trust me they made it work, just think of a cool Bourgeois-Bohème type of place.

It actually is a tiny bit over budget but I'm willing to cross that line if necessary. I did not take any pictures, because I do not want to get attached to a flat I might never see again.

So I try to keep it cool and to see what Ipek has found over the week-end.

Pas de photo aujourd'hui car la météo ne le permet toujours pas.

J'ai passé l'après-midi avec Ipek, qui doit être une des meilleurs agents immobiliers qu'il soit. Elle m'a été recommandée par ma société et elle connaît Istanbul en long et en large. Je suis vraiment ravi de pouvoir compter sur son expertise.

J'ai visité 5 appartements aujourd'hui et j'ai 6 autres visites de prévues pour ce week-end. Ipek m'a fait réaliser que mon budget me permettrait de trouver quelque chose de super au centre d'Istanbul. J'ai pu voir un logement avec une vue sur le Bosphore, un autre donnant sur une sublime Mosquée et son minaret, mais pour le moment ce sont deux autres logements qui ont retenus mon attention.

Le premier est assez petit, mais tout y est : meubles, électroménager, internet, ustensiles de cuisines... et tout est neuf ! Par ailleurs la propriétaire est adorable et parle n anglais impeccable, ce qui est clairement appréciable. Je ne suis pas fan de la petitesse, mais j'ai apprécié le fait que tout soit flambant neuf et que la décoration était de si bon goût.

Le dernier que j'ai visité était.... extravagant ! Imaginez un soupçon d'années 70's, quelques statues africaines, une architecture légèrement japonaise et surtout, une chambre avec une looooooonnnnngue fenêtre donnant sur un panorama de la place Taksim. L'appartement était entièrement équipé, TV Satellite, internet, linge de maison... une femme de ménage et deux chambres ! Je sais que ma description de la décoration a l’air un peu inquiétante mais croyez-moi l’appartement est sublime. Disons que c’est très BoBo.

C'était à vrai dire un chouillah au delà de mon budget mais je suis prêt à faire un effort si nécessaire. Je n'ai pris aucune photo afin de ne pas m'attacher à un endroit que je ne reverrai peut être jamais.

J'essaye donc de rester calme et d'attendre de visiter d'autres appartements avant de me prononcer.

Snow storm!

So we are having a bit of a snow storm today and possibly tomorrow, as a result I am allowed to come at work later an to leave earlier. It was actually the first time that I've seen a snow storm while hearing  thunderstorms.

I do need to take a picture of the impressive view that the tower I work in offers but because of the weather I did not get a chance to do do.

In the meantime I snapped two pictures of the massive shopping center next to my tower, I usually go and have my lunch there everyday.

Work wise all is fine, the team I work with is lovely and welcoming. I am however the only French on my floor, so communication can sometimes be a bit hazy.

Ici c'est la tempête de neige, de fait nous avons le droit de quitter le bureau plus tôt et de venir plus tard deman matin a cause du trafic stambouliote. La neige est tombée toute la journée en même temps que quelques éclairs et de la grêle... Bref la totale.

Je voulais prendre une photo de la vue offerte par la tour dans laquelle je travaille, mais la météo ne le permettait pas. J'ai cependant pris 2 photos de l'énorme centre commercial dans lequel je vais généralement déjeuner.

Niveau boulot tout va bien. Mon équipe est très sympa et accueillante. Par contre je suis le seul français de mon étage, ce qui rend parfois la communication un peu approximative.

My company did not joke around with my accommodation. Deluxe suite in what looks like an oriental palace!!

I'm a bit tired by all that travelling but as you can see, no need to worry yourselves for me, I'll be more than fine! I have to go, for I could do with a SPA! Yes, the SPA is free of charge!!

Je suis un peu fatigué par le voyage, mais inutile de s'inquiéter, vous pouvez voir que tout devrait bien se passer.

Je vous laisse car je crève d'envie de me détendre au SPA... Oui, le Spa est inclus!!

Waiting at the Airport

Rien de bien particulier, je tenais juste à vous tenir informé, je suis à l'aéroport de Luxembourg à quelques minutes de commencer les choses sérieuses. Pour le moment je fais passer le temps en grignotant !
