Exam

Salut à tous,

J'ai enfin fini mon premier cycle de turc. J'ai passé 3 heures d'examen ce matin et j'ai eu 100% de réussite, la note maximum! En iyi öğrenciyim!!

Cela va me permettre de respirer les week-ends puisque j'effectuerai mon niveau 2 en cours du soir et non plus le Samedi et le Dimanche matin. J'aurai donc beaucoup plus de temps à consacrer aux visites pendant le week-end.
C'est donc l'esprit libre que j'ai pris un brunch dans un quartier pittoresque d'Istanbul avant de faire un détour par le Marché Egyptien (Marché aux épices) pour prendre cette photo de Yeni Camii (Le Mosquée Nouvelle)

I've finally sat through my Level 1 Turkish Exam and I passed with flying colours! 100% success, you cannot top that! En iyi öğrenciyim.

I now can take a proper break during the week-ends to come, for I will attend Level 2 classes as evening classes. (As opposed to Saturday and Sunday mornings) Which means a lot more time to visit the city...
Satisfied with my results, I had a brunch in a picturesque area of the city, followed by a quick tour of the Egyptian Market (Spices Market) in order to snap this picture of Yeni Camii (The New Mosque)

Seminar

This week is seminar week so very little time to post in here. 

Just wanted to share a picture of the restaurant we ate at. Pretty fancy! The hotel is amazing too!

Cette semaine je suis en séminaire. Très peu de temps pour poster ici, mais je tenais à vous montrer le restaurant duquel je viens de sortir! Mon hotel est également incroyable!

Tuğra and B-day

I finally picked my Tuğra and I am very pleased with the result.
Went modest on the framing front for it is already a huge work of art, so, no need to go any crazier. Taking to France will be another story.

When at the framing shop, I also got myself a nice picture of Galata Tower during its erection, so I think my flat looks quite typical now.

Many thanks to those of you who thought of my B-day. I celebrated it by going out in a nice restaurant with some friends. My dear friend Bénédicte even gifted me with a complete Turkish Tea set, which I have already put to good use.

Next week is seminar week, so I’ll stay at a nice hotel in Sultanahmet to attend days and days of meetings in Turkish… wish me luck.

Je suis finalement allé récupérer ma Tuğra et suis ravi du résultat.
Je suis resté très modeste en ce qui concerne le cadre car le tableau est assez énorme en lui-même. Ramener tout cela en France sera une autre paire de manche.

Chez l’encadreur j’ai également acheté une photo de la Tour de Galata lors de sa construction ; mon appartement est désormais aux couleurs locales.

Merci mille fois à ceux qui ont pensé à mon anniversaire. J’ai fêté cela en dînant dans un bon restaurant avec quelques amis. Mon amie Bénédicte a même pris le soin de m’offrir un service à thé traditionnel ; service dont j’ai déjà fait bon usage.

Je suis en séminaire toute la semaine prochaine, je serai donc dans un hôtel de Sultanahmet afin d’assister à des jours et des jours de réunions en turc… souhaitez moi bonne chance.

Tuğra

I wanted one more Turkish touch to my interior. After recently coming across the whole concept of Turkish Tuğra (Pronounced Toohrah), I knew that this would be the perfect addition to my humble abode.
A Tuğra is basically a very elaborate drawing used as a signature or as a seal. Each Ottoman Sultan had his own Tuğra designed by the court calligrapher at the beginning of his reign.
Each and every part of a Tuğra has a precise meaning, and if most of the Sultan’s Tuğralar look really similar, they actually hold a very different signification.
I spent some time deciding on which Sultan I wanted to showcase above my couch and finally decided to give a go at Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He reigned on the Empire from 1520 to 1566 and is remembered has being a fair ruler, an extremely successful man and a true maverick. I read a lot about him and I love what he did as much as I love the look of his Tuğra.
I’ve just commissioned a copy of his Tuğra to a local artist, who happens to be the husband of a shopkeeper who’s been really good to me since I arrived here.
So I do believe that owning such a nice symbol is relevant to my life here and will carry on bringing me luck.

I’ll go and pick the finished product at some point these week and will certainly post about it later.

 

Tuğra

Alors que je voulais ajouter une touche orientale à mon intérieur, je suis tombé sur ce qui s’appelle une Tuğra (Prononcé Tourha).
Pour faire simple, une Tuğra est un dessin extrêmement élaboré utilisé comme signature par les sultans Ottomans. Au début du règne de chaque sultan, le calligraphe de la cour devait créer la Tuğra de laquelle le Sultan signera tous les documents officiels. Chaque partie d’une Tuğra a une signification précise, et si la plupart des Tuğralar semblent très similaires, elles n’en portent pas moins un sens très particulier et unique.
Il m’a fallu du temps pour choisir le Sultan dont la Tuğra agrémentera mes murs, mais après quelques recherches j’ai finalement choisi de faire confiance à Suleyman le Magnifique. Il régna sur l’empire de 1520 à 1566 et est encore aujourd’hui reconnu comme un législateur juste, un homme couvert de succès et un véritable libre-penseur aux multiples talents.
J’ai donc commissionné un artiste local pour réaliser une copie de cette Tuğra. L’artiste en question se trouve être le mari d’une commerçante de mon quartier qui a été très généreuse avec moi dès mon arrivée à Istanbul.
Je pense donc qu’accrocher cette Tuğra au-dessus de mon canapé fera beaucoup de sens et me portera chance.

Je vais récupérer le produit fini dans la semaine et ne manquerai pas de poster une photo sur mon blog
